Ectropian cervix (aka cervical erosion) - anyone else?

So I had a consult with a high risk OB yesterday, and he said I am definitely not high risk. So that was good news! They also did an internal check and finally gave me an explanation for my recurrent bleeds - ectropian cervix. From the drawing they sketched for me, looks like on my cervix about half of it has the ectropian cells on it.

Well, at least I know why I'm bleeding all the time! The OB also said pelvic rest wasn't necessary, and DTD was just fine. So hubby was very excited lol. Well, this morning we had not-too-vigorous BD session.....and wouldn't you know it, it sets off a pretty big bleed. SIGH.

Rang the hospital L&D and they said it all sounded fine, don't need to go in if there wasn't pain/cramping/continuous bleeding/hemorrhage levels. It tapered off within minutes, but I have had some bleeding recur today just when going to pee. Mostly spotting though. It just surprises me that just a bit of gentle contact with the cervix can set off that much blood - it wasn't really heavy bleeding, but like a light period flow, enough to drop into the toilet.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this in pregnancy. I'm worried I'll be so blase about blood that I'll miss the signs of something seriously wrong. Right now my plan is that if a bleed (especially one triggered by something obvious like sex or a bowel movement) doesn't settle down within 24 hours, then I'll go get checked out. I hope that's good enough.

Mostly so frustrated. My libido levels are off the chart, but EVERYTHING sets off the bleeding, even just messing around with no penetration. Heck, holding my pee for too long sets it off. ARGHHH. Seriously, my libido needs to go DIAF.

I haven't personally but know several people who have. Since it can get aggravated from estrogen, it's really quite common for it to flare up during pregnancy.

I can't even imagine how nervewracking it is. I do want to point out, though, that going in to have it checked may actually be worse than nothing because they're just going to aggravate it more (IF they do an exam) and you run the risk of contracting whatever germ(s) they have floating around in there. So while I do think the 24 hour rule is a good one, without other symptoms I'd def. want to err on the side of waiting rather than going in, when you can stand it.

Those were my thoughts too.....they just checked me yesterday, and that was the high risk OB's team, so I'm sure they know what to look for!! Considering the bleeding started well, mid-act LOL, that was clearly what caused it. I'm just surprised at the amount of blood (but then it's the first time we've had any penetration this pregnancy) and also annoyed that it's not stopped totally even 5 hours later.

It is reassuring that they just had a look yesterday though.

At least they are pretty careful about cleanliness in the L&D unit. Thank goodness I'm far enough along I can go straight to L&D with any problems and not have to go to the ER (yeeeech). I guess I'm skipping my dance class tonight so I can rest and let this stupid bleed settle down.

Sigh, so not worth a few min of "fun" lol. I just wish my libido would go away.

LOL I actually hesitated before posting that as I thought "oh gosh I hope I'm not making her paranoid about germs" but I just figure, if it's already irritated, the less messing around with it, the better.

Please keep us posted - take it easy tonight and if you're taking anything like fish oil or DHA supps let's have a day off for today in case it is in any way contributing via thinning of the blood.

Ooooh good point about the fish oil. I take omega3/DHA daily so that's a good idea, I totally forgot!

And hahahaa you can't make me more paranoid than I already am, lol. The nurse said it can take up to 24 hours to stop seeing fresh red when I wipe after I pee, so I guess this is par for the course for cervical erosions. It's just frustrating that every time I think I'm in the clear and test my luck by doing something normal, there it is again. SIGH. Also I guess I have to keep an eye on it after the baby arrives and get it cauterized if it doesn't disappear on its own in short order.

Thank goodness for my doppler lol.

Ahhh yes - I have been told several times I have an ectropian cervix - maybe more mild than yours sounds but I have it!! Also been told it's not a big deal... BUT I did have bleeding issues during the 2nd trimester of my 2nd pregnancy that I'm pretty confident were cervical-related. Happened about 4 or 5 times over the course of about 5 weeks where I'd just be going about my day and suddenly a small gush of blood would come out!! It would last about 24-48 hours, but after the initial "gush" it would immediately start tapering off... down to just spotting. I went in to L&D a couple of times, couple extra visits to the doctor's office, and had one high risk, ultra-detailed ultrasound w/ a high risk obgyn. They couldn't find anything "wrong" to explain the bleeding (no placental abruptions, previa, etc. etc.) and baby was always just fine. High risk obgyn said his best guess is that it had to do w/ my cervix. By about 28 weeks it stopped (although I had issues at delivery w/ my cervix - that's a whole other story!). But yea... I think my bleeding and my cervix and the erosion thing were all related.

Most doctors are super cautious about any bleeding since obviously there are some really serious things that can cause it (abruptions, previa, cervical polyps), but it sounds like your doctor has already ruled those out at this time and has concluded that it's most likely cervix-related. Your situation sounds a lot like what I had - it is really frustrating and unnerving!!! Hopefully it'll stop for you or wont cause you too much stress for the remainder of your pregnancy!!

Thanks ABC!! That sounds pretty much like what I'm having, except my cervix seems REALLY sensitive to just about anything. It's so freaky!!! I don't even worry about wiping red spotting out of nowhere anymore, but holy cow yesterday was a LOT of blood it seemed. Thank goodness there's nothing fresh this morning, just the old brown stuff working its way out, but I was just freaked out by how it didn't seem to stop yesterday as fast as it usually does (but then that was the first time we'd tried penetrative intercourse in this entire pregnancy - NEVER AGAIN!!)

I just don't want to get complacent and not get checked out and have it actually be something worrying. But L&D seems pretty unconcerned as long as there's no new symptoms like cramps/contractions. They told me not to sweat it unless it gets to a pad an hour level! So I guess ectropian cervixes can really bleed a lot.

I've just had my anatomy scan last week, and had a few scans before that, and I'm pretty reassured since I did have a consult with the high risk OB who said he went through all my scans. So if he says it's nothing internal, I believe him. They did see the ectropian tissue very clearly on the speculum check and it matches your experience exactly in terms of the bleeding starting/stopping, so I don't doubt it's just that. It's just really scary and frustrating.

I told hubby I feel like I have one of those pressure triggered mines up my vag LMAO. I just get to feeling normal, and BAM one cough sets off another bleed. I guess I just have to live with it, but it really sucks, especially since any sexual relations at all (even very gentle non penetrative) makes me bleed. I'm so ornery and bitchy and frustrated with my skyrocketing libido too. SIGH.

There is no libido like the "pelvic rest during pregnancy" libido LOL. WTH is that about!?! With my pelvic rest pregnancy I also had libido off the charts, so frustrating!

Well because, now you CAN'T have it!! I told DH it was like if I gave him Viagra everyday, then told him he's not allowed to do ANYTHING about it even solo. Aarrrrrghhhhh!!

The worst part is my libido has been MIA for years now because of all the infertility/TTC stress. Seriously, YEARS since sex has been anything but a scheduled duty to try to catch the egg. And now it comes roaring back thanks to preggo hormones, and I can do absolutely nothing. I'm gonna combust!!

Also it's just plain cruel my subconscious keeps coming up with really hot dreams......that get me all steamy, then I wake up and it's like - Oh. DAMMIT!
